Frequently asked questions

Installation and Operating System

How do I install BClocks?

  • Go to the Download page and download the setup program of BClocks. If your browser asks whether to run or save, select Save.
  • Go to your download folder and run BClocks_Setup.exe.
  • BClocks requires Microsoft .Net Framework version 4.0 or newer (default part of Windows 8). If you have Windows 7 or older and the .Net Framework 4.0 does not exist on your computer, it will be automatically installed. This may take a few minutes.
  • The installation has been finished, if you see three clocks on your desktop.

The installation of BClocks aborted with an error message!

If the installation fails, you should check your internet connection and the settings of your firewall and run the setup program of BClocks again.

Which versions of Windows does BClocks require?

BClocks is suitable for Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7, 8 and 10.
On Windows versions older than Windows XP SP2, BClocks will NOT run, because the program requires the Microsoft .Net Framework 4 (Client Profile), which requires at least Windows XP with Service Pack 2.

What is the installation directory of BClocks?

BClocks will be installed with the Microsoft ClickOnce technology. Therefore, you have no influence on the installation directory, because ClickOnce programs are always installed into a hidden cache within the local part of the user profile. The advantage is that no administrator rights are required for the installation of ClickOnce programs if the Microsoft .Net Framework 4 (Client Profile or full version) is already installed.

Operation

How do I open the BClocks menu?

Click a clock with the RIGHT mouse button to open the BClocks menu. There, you can add or remove clocks, change the style and the time zone for each clock or adjust the program settings to your needs.

How do I change the position, size and order of the clocks?

To change the position, click an arbitrary clock with the LEFT mouse button and drag the clocks to the desired position.

To change the size and arrangement of the clocks (horizontal/vertical), click an arbitrary clock with the LEFT mouse button and drag one of the four red bubbles that appear at the corners.

To change the order in case of multiple clocks, click the clock that shall be moved with the LEFT mouse button and click one of the red arrows that appear on this clock.

How can I get the clocks to the foreground if they are hidden because of other programs?

There are two ways to achieve this. The default setting is that BClocks can be overlapped by other windows, so that they don't cumber if you are working with other programs. In this case, you can get the clocks very easily to the foreground by simply moving the mouse to the bottom screen border. Via the menu item "Options" > "Common", you can even choose which of the four screen borders shall be sensitive for this function. However, this behavior can also be completely deactivated.

The second option is to activate the "Keep always on top" setting via the same menu item. The clocks will then always be displayed on top and cannot be overlapped by other programs.

How can I change the clock style?

Click with the RIGHT mouse button on the clock whose style shall be changed and select the menu item "Clock style".

In the window that then appears, click the clock style that you like.

How do I change the time zone of a clock?

Click with the RIGHT mouse button on the clock whose time zone shall be changed and select the menu item "Time zone".

The window that then appears shows a world map with all time zones of the world. If you move the mouse over the time zones of this map, the most important data of the respective time zone will automatically be displayed.

Just click with the LEFT mouse button on the time zone that you want to select for the clock.

Can I change the time zone description below the clock?

Yes! Click with the RIGHT mouse button on the clock whose time zone description shall be changed and select the menu item "Description". In the window that then appears, you can adjust the text. For example, you can set the name of a different city or you can even set the name of a friend who is currently residing in the time zone of this clock.

With the "Standard" button you can restore the default time zone description.

Why is the time zone description sometimes missing in case of a single clock?

By default, the time zone description is not visible if you are using only a single clock that shows the local time of your computer.

But you can specify that the time zone description is visible even in this case. Just select the menu item "Options" > "Clock design" and activate "Always show time zone description".

How do I add or remove a clock?

Click a clock with the RIGHT mouse button and select "Remove clock" to remove the clock or "Add clock" to add an additional clock. Please note that the removal of a clock is only possible if multiple clocks are displayed.

Is there also a digital clock?

No and Yes! (See the answer to the following question)

How does BClocks show morning and afternoon (AM / PM) or day and night?

BClocks contains 24 different styles that represent analog clocks. Each clock shows an AM/PM indicator on the lower half of the dial.

By default, a sun revolving clockwise around the earth appears as AM/PM indicator. A yellow sun on the upper hemisphere indicates the day and a blue sun on the lower hemisphere indicates the night. As long as the sun is visible on the left half of the globe, the clock is showing a time before midday (AM) and if the sun is visible on the right side, the clock is showing a time after midday (PM).

Instead of the sun, you can also set a small digital clock at the same place on the dial. To achieve this, open the BClocks menu using the RIGHT mouse button and click then "Options" > "Clock design" and select the type of AM/PM indicator that you like.

Can I turn on/off the sound?

Yes! In the BClocks menu item "Options" > "Sound", you can select the type of events that shall cause a sound and you can even completely deactivate BClocks sounds.

Where can I set the time or date?

BClocks uses the system clock of the computer. If you want to set the time or date of the computer, you must use the corresponding dialog of the operating system. Incidentally, it is recommended that you also use this dialog to activate the automatic synchronization of the computer's system clock via the Internet. This ensures that the time display is as exactly as possible.

You can even open this dialog via the BClocks menu. Just select the menu item "Options" > "System" and click on "Open Date‑and‑Time dialog...". Alternatively, you can also open this dialog from the Windows Control Panel.

Where can I see the program version and license status?

Click a clock with the RIGHT mouse button and select "Version & License".

Miscellaneous

Where are the clocks when I click on the "Show desktop" icon in the taskbar?

If you click the "Show Desktop" icon in the taskbar, all open windows - including BClocks - will be hidden by the operating system. If you click "Show Desktop" again or activate an arbitrary window, the clocks of BClocks will be restored.

My firewall reports that BClocks wants to connect to the Internet. Why is this happening?

From time to time, BClocks connects to the Bitlein web server to check for program updates. BClocks does not send any personal information about you to the Internet.
